Day 14 - Sat Sept 10th - Bundaberg to Rockhampton

Day 14 - Sat Sept 10th - Bundaberg to Rockhampton

Bundaberg, city of sugar. We woke to the news of her majesty Queen Elizabeth the II passing away, and kept an eye out for flags at half mast for the next few weeks.

We bid farewell to #10 in Our outlying trailer park and headed in for a quick town viewing.

The golden age of this town was somewhere in the Art Deco period, and the few blocks of the central area certainly show this.

Several elaborate bridges and some impressive early 20th century public buildings later, we decided to swing past the main sugar mill and factory for Bundaberg rum. It chugged and steamed proudly, while the surrounding building and suburb bore the signs of long exposure to the treacly air. Everything looked just a touch brown and potentially sticky.

As we pulled up interest was piqued by the ever present cane trains manoeuvring, so Sasha and papa did a quick wander to see what could be seen while Nastya fed. The sugar refinery was a hive of activity, and Sasha was clearly in awe of the size and movement, but the landscape was quite blasted by its presence, and felt a little sad so we kept our exploring short.

We drove to Moores park (great recommendation, Marianna) to a cute little cafe with tasty food, good service and interesting tea (but a few too many flies for outdoor eating). Mama found some great summer dresses in the op shop next door, and Sasha procured a bucket to build sand castles.

Beach and park - hermit crab and gentle wave time. Family portrait.

The gravity of a berry farm pulled us in, and we found some most excellent strawberry icecream . Blueberries and strawberries came with us, The frozen goods were devoured on the grass, our new favourite dining space.

The town of Winfield has some weird cafes that we need to come back and explore.

An amazing sunset location (another great recommendation from Marina) was Lake Awooga. Stunning setting, wallabies, many holiday makers and a true sense of relaxation.

We arrived at the David Motel.

Mr 3 is now responsible for esky unpacking.

The pizza place down the road was suggested, and we walked off the day's travel. The room was noise proof but the sleep was restless - may have been the temperature creep finally kicking in.
