Day 3 - 30th Aug 2022, M’s bday

 Woke up to serenity…

Ok, that’s not true, with two smalls we wake up to noisy chaos every day, but outside, out of the cabin, there was serenity.

Step off the deck, onto sand… and right there, a lake. And birds. Pacific black ducks, pelicans, Willy wagtails.

There were few other people there but I imagine it’s a summer holiday location that people book year after year.

Birthday cuddles followed by a wander.

Mama walked up to the park office with Nastya, while papa and Sasha drove, then went to meet half way… of course we all managed to miss each other but met back at Leggys for coffee and breakfast.

Many of the cabins were closed due to flood damage or disrepair, a sign of the toll of the last three years on the tourism industry.

Two bacon and egg rolls were ordered 3 minutes before breakfast ended, and Sasha spent the next half hour developing an obsession with the pool table. There Was A LOT of country music playing here, it did not spoil breakfast, but it was very firmly present.

Drove to Port Macquarie for sushi at Makimoto. Sasha and Nastya were fans.

Ate at the park nearby, very cool new playground.

Baskin Robins was also had, though it was underwhelming.

Quick Koala hospital visit.

Roto House Historic Site, Lord Street

Many of the patients were not on display this time due to the stress of their recovery.

The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is open every day from 8:30am to 4:00pm and is welcoming visitors wanting to see and learn more about koalas. Entry is free and there is no need to book.

The drive to Nambucca Heads was calm, and we got there in time to see the bats rising for their evening fruit forage. We were staying at the Beach rooms, a 1960s motel, that was in the midst of a gut and refurbishment. The rooms were lovely, and the freshly oiled timber finishing, modern uncluttered feel, and friendly staff were very welcome.

We were directed to a tavern up the hill for dinner, and had steak with jacket potato and chicken with gnocchi in sage burnt butter… very tasty. We also had cider and a Bentspoke Crank shaft (that they tried to say was local :D ).

Sasha was again drawn to the pool table. This, however, was a paid one and the frustration of only being able to fling around one white ball was showing. Some rough-round-the- edges local tradies  showed up to play a few games. They were rather chuffed at Sasha’s enthusiastic cheering at their ball-sinking skills. But “mama, I’ll just move the black ball for them” encouraged us to call it a night.

But not without a play of 50 cent ‘in da club’ (I had to party like it was my birthday).

The Nambucca heads police station has a bonkers ceramic mosaic that we stopped at twice. The feel of the place was like Kuranda on the coast, would totally visit again.
